Before you buy a used EV from China

  • Get a battery health reportAsk the exporter for a state-of-health reading from a diagnostic tool. Mileage alone tells you little about the battery.
  • Apply for the exemption certificateThe duty and VAT waiver needs an Import Duty Exemption Certificate from the Federal Ministry of Finance before the car arrives.
  • Plan your chargingChina-market cars have GB/T sockets. Buy a GB/T home charger or a tested adaptor before you rely on public chargers.
  • Check the software languageSome cars can be switched to English; some cannot. Ask before paying.
  • Expect Customs to value the car itselfCustoms uses its own VIN valuation, which can differ from what you paid. Duty-based figures can move as a result.
  • Use a reputable exporterPay through traceable channels, ask for the condition report and photographs, and confirm the export paperwork.

How we calculate

The car's price plus export fees gives the FOB value; adding shipping and insurance gives CIF. Customs charges duty and the NAC levy on CIF, a surcharge on the duty, the ECOWAS levy on CIF and CISS on FOB, then VAT on the lot. Under the EV exemption duty, levy and VAT are zero. We then add Lagos port clearing and registration. The “typical” figure uses the middle of the listed prices; the range uses the cheapest and dearest listings we saw.
